Digital & IT Transformation
Transformation closes the gap between the current state (as-is) and the target state (to-be). It works across three layers. Strategic goals set the direction. Capability gaps define the difference in business and IT capabilities to be closed. The business and IT architecture moves from as-is to to-be. The target architecture is the concrete destination.
Digital transformation is the process toward the target business architecture (i.e., the to-be state of the business model, processes, and capabilities), guided by the Digital Architecture Model as the overarching reference model. It reshapes how the organization creates and captures value (e.g., new digital products, customer experiences, revenue streams).
IT transformation is the process toward the IT target architecture (i.e., the to-be state of infrastructure, applications, and data). It modernizes the technology foundation (e.g., cloud migration, legacy replacement, automation).
The two move together. Business and IT architecture form one combined target. Digital transformation addresses the business architecture. IT transformation addresses the IT architecture. The IT architecture underpins the business architecture, so a viable IT target state is the condition for a viable business target state. Scope decides the term, not the label.
Execution: the integrated roadmap
Transformation is realized through projects selected and scheduled on an integrated roadmap. The roadmap sequences these projects to close the capability gaps and reach the to-be architecture. It is the concrete bridge from the current state to the target state.
Where portfolio, programs, and projects fit
Portfolio, program, and project management are essential parts of the transformation process.
- Project portfolio selects and prioritizes the investments that make up the transformation (i.e., what gets funded, in what order, within what capacity). It produces the integrated roadmap.
- Programs coordinate related projects and manage interdependencies, benefits, resources, and stakeholders. One transformation runs through one or more programs.
- Projects deliver the individual outputs that change the architecture.
Together these disciplines carry the organization from as-is to to-be and convert strategic intent into realized value.
The alignment core
Alignment holds the process together. Strategic goals define the target architecture. The portfolio funds and prioritizes it on the integrated roadmap. Coordinated programs and projects deliver it. AI-supported alignment activities strengthen this work through strategic analyses, consistency checks, artifact control, monitoring, and roadmap optimization. A transformation without portfolio anchoring stays unfunded. A transformation without coordinated delivery stays an intention.
